Inflammatory arthritis is a type of chronic autoimmune disorder, and the term refers to any type of arthritis that is caused by an overactive immune system. Unlike noninflammatory arthritis – such as osteoarthritis, which occurs due to wear and tear of the cartilage in the joint – inflammatory arthritis can suddenly affect anyone of any age.
Inflammatory arthritis can not only affect many joints at the same time, but it can also affect your organs like the skin, gastrointestinal tract, eyes, lungs, and heart.
Let’s discuss some of the most common and less common types of inflammatory hip arthritis, and where you can go throughout North Dakota to seek expert treatment for hip pain, arthritis, or any issues with your muscles, bones, and joints.
What Are the Most Common Types of Inflammatory Arthritis of the Hip?
The three most common types of inflammatory arthritis that can affect your hip joint and produce painful symptoms include:
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which the connective tissues (synovium) that line the inside of the joint capsule thicken, swell, and produce chemicals that attack and destroy the cartilage in your hip joint. Since rheumatoid arthritis usually affects the same joint on both sides of the body, both of your hips can be affected by this type of inflammatory hip arthritis.
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is when your spine becomes inflamed, and it can affect other joints. Nearly one-third of people with ankylosing spondylitis experience inflammation in their hip and shoulder joints, causing pain, stiffness, and discomfort in the affected joint.
Psoriatic Arthritis
People with psoriasis of the skin often develop psoriatic arthritis – a skin and nail disease that forms red patches with scaling. The affected joint can be swollen, warm, and red. Sausage-like swelling can develop in the toes and fingers, as well as pain in the tailbone and hip area.
Rare Types of Inflammatory Hip Arthritis
Some of the less common types of inflammatory hip arthritis are the following:
- Reactive arthritis – Reactive arthritis is when various joints of your body, including your hips, become red and swollen. This type of inflammatory arthritis is triggered by another type of infection in another part of your body.
- Juvenile inflammatory arthritis (JIA) – As the most common type of arthritis in kids, juvenile inflammatory arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the synovium (lubricating tissue lining the joint) becomes red, swollen, and painful.
- Sarcoidosis – This is a condition in which granulomas – small patches of red and swollen tissues – develop in bodily organs. In sarcoidosis, your joints can become painful, and this can develop into a form of inflammatory hip arthritis.
